Letter from Louis XVI (16) to the Estates

Letter from Louis XVI and countersigned by Baron De Breteuil to the secretary and clerk of the Estates of the province of Languedoc.

By order of the King.
Dear and well-beloved, we have, for certain good causes and concerning the welfare of our affairs and our subjects, ordered the convocation and assembly of two of the three estates of our province of Languedoc, for the present year, in our city of Montpellier on the sixth day of next December, and to this end to have our letters and commissions dispatched for what is requisite and necessary, and have commanded the commissioners by [our] deputies to be present there, and to make known to said estates the cause of the aforementioned assembly. To this end, we command you to be present there also, to fulfill the duty of your state and office; in doing so you will render us a most agreeable service, and do not fail in this: For such is our pleasure.

We understand from this old French that the reception requested by the king in the city of Montpellier must be irreproachable and that, above all, all protagonists concerned by this assembly must be in attendance.
This insistence with the repetition of the verb "to command" but also the use of "ordered," "necessary," "make known," "duty," "service" makes us immediately understand who is the boss.
It remains for us to hear the reason for this assembly for the purpose of our pleasure in noting the subsequent outcomes.
